CHARL

Every Jumper Tells a Story...

Charl Knitwear is a modern British knitwear brand which draws inspiration directly from Norfolk fishermen’s Gansey jumpers where its founder, Frankie Davies grew up.
The collection is crafted from the finest certified British wools, organic cottons and natural alpaca yarns by highly skilled small-scale manufacturers in England and Italy.
Frankie has 25 plus years of experience designing for industry leaders including Burberry, Benetton and Studio Nicholson. She has channelled this experience into hand picking the best manufacturers and most beautifully simple silhouettes and textures to create her own thoroughly modern knitwear collection.

Re-telling Heritage Stories

There’s a story to be found within every old, hand-knitted jumper. Mindful of this, Charl sets out to preserve the stitches and stories of the Norfolk Gansey jumpers by remodelling them into modern classics. The result is a timeless collection which strives to preserve our heritage for future generations.

Certified British Wools

The Charl collection has been knitted using Certified British Wools since it was founded in 2020 because this is the most sustainable way of producing knitwear in Britain. The wool from our native flocks is desperately underutilized, but this collection shows British wools at their finest.

Drawing on my 25+ years’ experience designing for top luxury brands, I felt compelled to create a knitwear collection which at its heart is about modern, pared back but ultimately wearable pieces, rooted in the celebration and evolution of heritage craftsmanship. Since the birth of my children, I have felt an increased responsibility towards a more ethical and sustainable method of sourcing and production. I know from experience that both are possible if you really believe in them.“
