Part of CHARL's “Make Do and Mend” Autumn ’24 collection, which is inspired by the Norfolk Fishermen’s Gansey jumpers and the resourcefulness of their knitters who unravelled and mended the jumpers when they became worn, knitting the mended areas in whatever wool they had to hand, often in a slightly different colour. Bigby is a chunky crew neck knitted gilet with roomy proportions, an original “hailstone” stitch on the top half of the body and contrasting pockets, button placket and neck trim.
Gilbert Bigby “Leather” Rook was a Sheringham fisherman who was known as “Old Leather” due to his toughness.
